A note from the Task Force Director
Serving as Task Force Director for the Big Sky Bravery winter Task Force from January 12–17, 2026, was both an honor and a privilege. This program supported four recipients and was carried out through the dedicated efforts of three volunteers (S., Drew, and Zac) and the exceptional support of the Big Sky Bravery staff. The week was defined by professionalism, adaptability, and a shared commitment to providing the recipients with an environment conducive to recovery, reflection, and reconnection.
The week began with some last-minute adjustments due to personnel changes and evolving coordination requirements. Despite these challenges, the volunteers and staff demonstrated exceptional teamwork and flexibility, ensuring that all logistical and operational elements came together seamlessly. From transportation and lodging to daily activity coordination and individualized support, every aspect of the retreat was executed with precision. While the preparation phase required adaptability and deliberate effort behind the scenes, the execution appeared flawless to the recipients, reflecting the effectiveness, professionalism, and commitment of everyone involved.
The Task Force consisted of three days of skiing and snowboarding and one day of snowmobiling. Conditions throughout the week were outstanding, allowing the recipients to fully immerse themselves in the experience. These activities provided more than recreation; they served as a conduit for mental reset, physical engagement, and meaningful connection. Time spent in the mountains allowed the recipients to step away from the relentless operational tempo and sustained demands they have endured over many years. The environment fostered both reprieve and reflection, allowing each individual the space to decompress and regain perspective.
Equally important to the activities was the environment created by the volunteers and staff. Responsibilities were shared seamlessly among S., Drew, and Zac, ensuring that the recipients were continuously supported, engaged, and cared for throughout the week. Whether coordinating daily logistics, facilitating discussions, or simply being present, the volunteers maintained an unwavering focus on the recipients' well-being. Their professionalism, empathy, and commitment were instrumental in creating an atmosphere of trust, safety, and camaraderie.
Throughout the experience, the recipients demonstrated deep appreciation for the opportunity and the experience provided by Big Sky Bravery. The structured activities, combined with intentional downtime and meaningful conversation, enabled them to reconnect with themselves and with one another. The shared experiences fostered authentic brotherhood, mutual understanding, and personal growth. The Task Force achieved its intended purpose by providing a space for individuals who have carried significant responsibility and operational burden to pause, reflect, and reset.
Overall, the week was an unqualified success. Despite initial coordination challenges, the dedication of the volunteers and the Big Sky Bravery staff ensured flawless execution from the recipients’ perspective. The Task Force provided not only adventure and recreation, but also meaningful restoration, renewed clarity, and strengthened bonds among men who share a unique and demanding profession.

“I had no idea what I was getting into when I was blessed to come out to a week with BSB. Initially I thought it was just an MWR type trip, no big deal, just go hang out with the boys and have some fun. That was a completely inadequate way to describe my experience in Montana. The entire team was incredible, and especially our volunteer leaders, S., Zac, and Drew.
It is obvious how much this organization and its supporters care about the community.
From the first day when we were given an in-brief at BSB headquarters, it was obvious that this is a professional, well-run organization that takes pride in its focused mission. That mission in itself is unique. While there are many groups that help the veteran community, I have never seen or heard of anything like BSB. The activities in which we participated were awesome, and things that I never would have been able to do otherwise, but the real impact of the week was far more subtle than just the great memories made while snowboarding, snowmobiling, and generally enjoying the beautiful area. It was the chance to connect, with expert guidance from the leadership, with my brothers. The great fun we had together each day served as the catalyst of that connection, and provided the shared experience necessary to foster it. The inclusion of thought-provoking and sometimes quite difficult discussions each night was an unexpected event, and it really opened my eyes to the fact that there are so many of us struggling with similar issues. That realization was impactful, encouraging, and something that I will carry forward with me.”

“My time at the Big Sky Bravery winter program was one of the best experiences I’ve had in a long time. From the moment we arrived, the volunteers made it clear that the week was about taking care of us, giving us space to breathe, and reconnecting with what really matters. It wasn’t just the snowboarding, snowmobiling, incredible meals, or the beautiful lodge—though all of that was outstanding. What made the trip truly meaningful was the time spent with other operators from different branches and the volunteers who hosted us. Sharing meals, stories, and challenges with people who understand the job created a level of trust and camaraderie that’s hard to find anywhere else.
The experience gave me a real mental reset.
It reminded me how important it is to slow down, focus on family, and build strong relationships with the people around you. That week in Montana wasn’t just a break from the grind—it was a chance to reflect, recharge, and come back with a clearer head and a stronger sense of purpose. I’m incredibly grateful to Big Sky Bravery and the donors who make experiences like this possible.”

“The week-long Task Force with BSB was exactly what I needed to step away from the grind and refocus on what truly matters. Hard days in the mountains pushed us physically and stripped away distractions, while intentional downtime forced honest reflection. This is where the real growth happened, and strong connections were built with men of similar backgrounds and shared values.
The terrain, the work, and the brotherhood made this an experience I’ll carry with me long after leaving the mountains.”
